Living in a fast paced world, with everything from ads to other people telling us who we should be, means that we all can lose touch with ourselves from time to time. Maybe you’ve been out of touch for longer than you can remember. Either way, there are simple things you can do to reconnect with yourself – with who you are and what you want, outside of what the world is demanding of you right now.
Spend some time alone
Whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert, there are advantages to spending time alone. Juggling workplaces full of meetings and collaborations, and maintaining our social lives, means that spending time alone can be a rare treat. When was the last time you did something just for yourself? Pick an activity you love, like going to a museum or taking a walk, a spa day, or journaling. Having some me-time away from other people will clear your mind and allow you to finally settle the things that have been floating around in the back of your mind.
Have a digital detox
Spending too much time online, especially on social media, can be stressful. It seems fun at first, but it’s a little too easy to go overboard. It can also distract you from your goals. Do you really want your friend’s life? Or are you just competing with a false ideal? Instead of spending time comparing your life to others’, pick up a book or spend some time in nature. Do a lil’ soul searching. Spending time away from all your devices will help you reconnect with what’s really important to you. You might also find that, lo and behold, the world won’t end if you spend a day without being glued to your phone.
Revisit your goals
It’s a good time to revisit any goals you’ve set for yourself. Once we get moving on goals, we realize what’s working and what isn’t, at least for right now. If you haven’t written anything down yet or created a vision board, now is a great time to start! It’s important to visualize what your top priorities are, and see what’s been achieved, what needs to be tweaked, and what should be thrown out. Let your mind roam free and don’t be afraid to dream. Learn to listen to yourself instead of what other people expect from you for a change.
So these are three simple ways to reconnect with yourself when you feel like you’ve lost touch. It’s so important to take that time and remember what makes you happy.
