As you probably know by now, I’m big on goal-setting. We are in constant motion, and can propel ourselves in the direction we’d like to go if we get intentional about things. Every bucket list is ever-changing as we achieve what we set out to do and priorities start to shift. Over the past couple of years, I’ve learned a lot about myself, including what works for me in terms of staying healthy. These are the top 3 health goals I’m focusing on right now:
Tame the monkey mind
Monkey mind is a term used to describe an easily distracted, all-over-the-place mental state. *ahem* “We all have monkey minds, Buddha said, with dozens of monkeys all clamoring for attention.” In that sense, we can all become prisoners of our own minds.
The good news is, we can change that. In a previous post on how I’m recharging this month, I talked about how I’m back to meditating every morning. This has been the best tool for me to learn how to observe my thoughts without letting them control me.
To tame my monkey mind, I’m also striving to spend less time glued to a screen. This is a challenge, as both work and play seem to demand a lot of it. I’m trying to make more time to curl up with a good read, and choosing real conversations over virtual ones.
Get back to the gym
Although I’m not much of a gym person, I do love taking group classes. Last year, I got really into an aerobics class, and even tried kickboxing for a change. I realized that switching things up (i.e. doing something besides just yoga) is what I need to keep things interesting and fun, both physically and mentally. Towards the end of the year, I fell out of my routine for various reasons. I want to get back into the swing of things starting next month. My goals is to try new classes, including aerial (anti-gravity) yoga and anything else that strikes my fancy.
Eat less refined sugar
I’ve been generally good about sugar for a year or so (check out my original blog post all about my sugar addiction and how I overcame it). Even after I decided to consume less sugar, I still had treats in moderation. I don’t believe in depriving myself of the things I love – it’s all about balance. That said, I am still kind of adjusting to having had all kinds of sweets over the holidays, and the general sluggish nature of January.
I’m slowly starting to opt for healthier alternatives again by always keeping healthier snacks on hand. Another big weakness of mine is sweetened, coffee-based drinks, especially when I’m feeling low on energy. I can usually go a day or two without coffee when I’m at the office, but I definitely overdid it last week. I’m planning on upping my fruit and veg intake again, and going for more green tea to keep my energy up.
Have you set any health goals? I’d love to hear what they are!
